If you have crooked teeth, they can very well cause some self-consciousness for you. You might hide away your grin, but just what can you do about it? After a quick search online, you might’ve seen different people choose veneers or Invisalign. While they both can straighten a smile, which one is right for you? Keep reading to learn more about these two treatments.

How Can Veneers Straighten My Smile?

In short, these are thin, porcelain shells that cover the front of your teeth. They are a cosmetic treatment, so they are effective at fixing up chips, stains, and minor gaps. This can give you a more aesthetic set of teeth. In fact, they are sometimes called “instant orthodontics!”

All it takes is two appointments, a couple of weeks apart. In the first visit, your dentist removes a thin layer of enamel. After taking impressions, they get sent to a dental lab where each shell is carefully crafted. Once they are ready, they will be bonded on.

While veneers can cover misalignment, this treatment doesn’t physically shift them. Not everyone can get them, depending on the severity of their orthodontic issues. Additionally, they are also permanent! Enamel can’t grow back, so you will need to get replacements eventually. Don’t fret, as these durable shells can last for up to 15 years with the proper care.

How Does Invisalign Work?

This treatment has become more desirable in orthodontics because it involves clear aligners. They are plastic trays that you wear for 20 to 22 hours every day. You can remove them while you eat, so they can fit more easily into your lifestyle.

By applying constant pressure, your teeth will start to shift into a healthier bite. Every week or so, you’ll swap over to a new set of aligners to keep your smile-straightening journey going smoothly. On average, treatments can take 12 to 18 months, but delays are possible if you don’t get the full wear time.

What Treatment Should I Get?

The answer to this question largely depends on your unique case! Minor misalignments that aren’t causing any problems may be corrected with veneers. However, mild to moderate malocclusions may call for Invisalign. By scheduling a consultation with your dentist, you can learn more about both treatments and figure out which one will help you get the aesthetic smile that you deserve.
