Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is typically the second line of defense against gum disease, after improving your at-home oral hygiene routine. This process involves removing all plaque and tartar accumulation along the gumline and as far as the pocket of the gums as well as smoothing out the roots of the teeth. Root planing helps remove deposits of hardened bacteria to allow the gums to healthily reattach to the teeth, protecting the vulnerable structures underneath.

Laser Periodontal Treatment

We may also utilize our soft tissue laser in conjunction with scaling and root planing for those who are showing more progressed signs of gum disease. This advanced piece of technology is able to kill harmful oral bacteria on-contact and evaporate infected gum tissue to ensure a smooth and fast healing process. It also cauterizes the tissue to minimize post-operative bleeding and risk of infection, as well as make your treatment more comfortable.

Antibiotic Treatment

After scaling and root planing, we may also administer antibiotic treatment to help your body fight off the infection. We utilize Arestin, which are small spheres that we can pack into the pockets of your gums, where the infection originates. Over the course of two weeks, the Arestin microspheres will gradually release the antibiotic to fight the infection and kill harmful oral bacteria. This means that you won’t have to worry about remembering to take a pill every day or pick up any type of prescription!
